Exchanges Inspired by the kaleidoscopic imagery of early 20th century mechanical ballets and the independent collaborative methods of Merce Cunningham and John Cage, Exchanges is a joint effort among six individual artists working from home bases in Phoenix, New York, and London. Sculpture, music, movement, and costume converge here--the work of each artist fused with and juxtaposed against the work of the others in a present-day happening. Relying primarily on e-communications with the choreographer, the dancers work with a set of written instructions and a predetermined time frame. They meet on stage and their resulting actions and interactions create a theatrically framed experiment in interpretation and improvisation.
